Buffalo Springfield were the short-lived yet influential band that united such superstars as Neil Young and Stephen Stills. Lots of bands got their start on the Sunset Strip, but none quite so literally as Buffalo Springfield. Buffalo Springfield , Canadian-American band that combined inventive songwriting, skillful instrumental interplay, and harmony vocals into a stunning folk rock signature sound, which laid the groundwork for southern California country rock. The original members were Stephen Stills b. January 3, , Dallas, Texas, U. May 9, , Yellow Springs , Ohio, U. October 1, , Belleville, Ontario. Later members included Jim Messina b. December 5, , Maywood, California, U. Furay, Stills, and Young all wrote songs, provided lead vocals, and played guitar. Palmer played bass; drummer Martin had played with country rock pioneers the Dillards. In a six-week gig at the Whisky-A-Go-Go club on Sunset Strip, the band polished their sound and refined their image, later gaining a record label— Atlantic subsidiary Atco.

About three busloads of Los Angeles police showed up, who looked very much like storm troopers. Robert Plant also cut a version with his pre-Zep band, Band of Joy. By , the situation in Los Angeles was tense. An increasing number of clubgoers was descending on the Strip, irritating area residents and upscale boutiques, and the LAPD instigated a 10 p. According to reports, a fight broke out for reasons having nothing to do with the curfew; a car carrying a group of Marines was bumped by another vehicle. On December 5th, only a few weeks after the Strip mayhem, the Springfield went into an L. That was it. The combination of the two guitar parts, with my scared little voice, made the record. I still recall feeling so moved by that song. It sounded so cool to me, that combination of the acoustic and electric guitars and the lyrics.
The group released three albums and several singles during its brief existence, including " For What It's Worth ". The band combined elements of folk and country music with British invasion and psychedelic-rock influences, and, along with the Byrds , were part of the early development of folk-rock. With a name taken from the manufacturer's nameplate from a steamroller , Buffalo Springfield formed in Los Angeles in with Stills guitar, keyboards, vocals , Dewey Martin drums, vocals , Bruce Palmer bass , Furay guitar, vocals , and Young guitar, harmonica, piano, vocals. After various drug-related arrests and line-up changes, the group broke up in Furay, along with Jim Messina , went on to form the country-rock band Poco. When Stills' band broke up at the end of that tour, he moved to the West Coast , where he worked as a session musician and auditioned unsuccessfully for, among other bands, the Monkees. Both agreed, although Koblun chose to leave before very long and joined the group 3's a Crowd. In need of a lead guitarist, Palmer invited Young to join the group, and Young accepted.
